CASE STUDY N°3
Name of the SEAT
company/Thematic
Profile SEAT is a Spanish automobile manufacturer that is part of the Volkswagen
Group. It operates in over 75 countries and has a workforce of around
15,000 employees.
Challenge SEAT's challenge was to introduce a flexible work program that could
improve work-life balance for employees, increase productivity, and
provide a safe working environment during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Solution The SmartWork programme, a model to promote a flexible, dynamic
working environment that favours the work-life balance
● This initiative offers employees the opportunity to combine
Policy parameters working from the office with remote work, giving them greater
flexibility and freedom in managing their work schedules.
● It operates on the principle of mutual trust between the
employee and the company, allowing employees to work
remotely for up to two days per week from any location.
● Employees have the flexibility to organize their own work
schedules within a given timeframe between 6 am and 8 pm.
● A digital disconnection agreement has been put in place to ensure
that employees have the right to disconnect from work-related
communications outside of their regular working hours.
Employees are given the freedom to switch off from work-related
communication when they are not on duty.
● It also promotes environmental sustainability by contributing to
the reduction of CO2 emissions in the atmosphere. On average,
remote work through this program results in a reduction of 7.2
kilos of CO2 emissions per person per day, thereby helping to
reduce the carbon footprint of the company and contribute to a
cleaner environment.
Development & ● SEAT developed and implemented the Smart Work program with
oversight input from employees, managers, and HR professionals.
● The company has a dedicated HR team that oversees the
program's implementation and compliance.
● To ensure the program's success, SEAT has also provided training
to employees on how to use the technological tools and how to
maintain effective communication with their colleagues while
working remotely.
Outcomes ● The program has resulted in increased employee satisfaction and
work-life balance, as well as improved productivity and
efficiency.
● The program has helped SEAT reduce its carbon footprint by
reducing the number of employees commuting to work, and has
positioned the company as a leader in the implementation of
flexible work policies in the automotive industry.
● During the COVID-19 pandemic, the Smart Work program has
