Profile BBVA (Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria) is a multinational financial
services company headquartered in Madrid, Spain. It is one of the largest
banks in Spain and operates in more than 30 countries around the world.
As of the end of 2020, BBVA had approximately 122,000 employees
worldwide, more than 12,000 employees in Spain.
Challenge Promoting a more results-oriented work culture, adapting to new
workforce trends and retaining talent
Solution The ‘FlexWork’ programme
● This hybrid model is implemented company-wide on a permanent
Policy parameters basis, although it might change according to the needs.
● Employees will be able to take advantage of this measure
whenever possible depending on the nature of the position.
● They will be able to work from home up to 40% of their time,
with great autonomy to organize themselves even on the same
day and being able to distribute this percentage on a quarterly
basis.
● They are allowed to do so from two different addresses within
the national territory.
● Employees can work part-time, either permanently or
temporarily, as long as they meet the requirements of their role
and ensure that their work is completed satisfactorily.
● Employees can share a full-time role with another employee,
dividing the responsibilities and workload between them.
Development & ● BBVA conducted surveys and focus groups with employees to
oversight better understand their needs and preferences and used this
feedback to inform the development of the FlexWork program.
● IT departments are responsible for developing and implementing
the necessary technology infrastructure to support remote work
and flexible schedules, such as virtual collaboration tools and
cloud-based storage systems.
● HR are responsible for developing and communicating policies
related to flexible work arrangements, and for training managers
and employees on how to effectively manage and work in a
remote or flexible environment.
● BBVA has been selected as one the 21 best Spanish companies in
terms of corporate welfare by the global human resources
consulting firm Intrama.
Outcomes ● The FlexWork programme is one of the measures most valued by
employees, along with work-life balance and digital disconnection
measures.
